How to play Hello – Adele

Hello by Adele is a great song to practice fingerpicking. It is a great addition to my fingerpicking course that you can do on my website.

The song has a very repetitive guitar chord pattern. I will explain a few different versions so that even a beginner could play this song by watching my video. What makes this song special is the timing of the chords. Every second chord is off beat. This is an example of how you can take a relatively simple chord progression and by changing the timing, achieve really good results.

Song structure:
Verse:  Em / G / D / C
Bridge: Em   D / G/B / C / Em / D / C
or  Em / D / Bm / C / Em / D / C
Chorus: Em / C / G / D

Lesson 4 – Travis picking – Fingerpicking for beginners

Let’s do something new today – Travis picking. It is a very cool technique that will add a nice rhythmical variation to your chord progressions.

The term “Travis picking” is used to describe a variety of fingerpicking styles, but in a simple form it is a style of fingerpicking that involves a steady rhythm of bass notes played with the thumb while the 1st , 2nd and 3rd fingers play the melody on the higher strings.

Lesson 3 – Fingerpicking for beginners

Welcome to the 3rd lesson on how to play fingerpicking guitar. Today we will work with some variations to the concepts we learned in the past two lessons. We are going to alternate the bass between two and three strings.

This concept will add some color to your fingerpicking songs. Remember we are only alternating the bass (thumb position), the rest of the fingers stay in the same position. Have fun!

Lesson 1 – Fingerpicking for beginners

Welcome to our first lesson. Fingerpicking is a wonderful way to expand your guitar skills. It will add colour to your songs and music. Somehow, just using the fingers to play the rhythm, brings us closer to the guitar.

So many great guitarists only use finger picking as their main technique to play (or no pick at all!) : Mark Knopfler, Tommy Emmanuel, Jeff Beck!
