The idea behind this exercise is to help you develop finger strength and independence. It will also improve your picking technique. In this exercise we are going to use all 4 fingers. I am going to use alternate picking – it simply means that I am going to pick the string down and up.
To play this exercise, position your 1st finger on the 1st string, 1st fret, your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret 1st string, 3rd finger on the 3rd fret 1st string and your 4th finger on the 4th fret 1st string. This is our initial position. If you struggle with the stretch, try to start a little bit higher on the neck. The frets are a little bit closer and it will be a little bit easier to play. As you get better, you can move the starting position closer to the first fret. Remember, never play through the pain! You could hurt your hand. Try to relax as much as possible.
